1. Great Winter Workouts: Weightlifting
Of course, weightlifting is a tried-and-true way to stay strong all through the holidays.
The great thing about lifting weights is that you don’t have to go to the gym unless that’s your thing. You can easily pick up a pair of dumbbells right from home. With a weightlifting workout accessible on your smart device or TV, the gloomy weather outside is no longer a concern. Many gyms offer a variety of machines and weightlifting options. YouTube has so many awesome, free, workouts! Caroline Girvan is my go-to for weightlifting at home. She has many 30-day programs.
2. Great Winter Workouts: Yoga
If you are no stranger to fitness but have never tried yoga, hear me out. I have always found it funny that some people out there think yoga does not work a body.
Calisthenics anyone?
If you have found yourself in this category, give Ashtanga yoga a go. Ashtanga yoga is a style that promotes fluid movement through chaturanga, planks, down dogs, and upward dogs. Try holding the plank pose for ten minutes during a flow; it’s a total body scorcher!
Of course, yoga is a great way to relieve stress, meditate, and stretch. So, if stretching and flexibility are your goals, pretty much all yoga, especially yin yoga, is great for this.
Vinyasa yoga is another great yoga like Ashtanga yoga. It will be faster paced, and you’ll be working on balance, endurance, and holding your own body weight for strengthening. YouTube streams free yoga workouts. And you can choose just about any length video too. Julianna and Mark from Boho Beautiful are my absolute favorites!
Pilates, though similar to yoga is another one of my favorite ways to stay fit! Move With Nicole and Eleni Fit are my go to ladies on YouTube!
3. Great Winter Workouts: HIIT
HIIT, or high-intensity interval training, involves sequences of varied-paced movements designed to elevate your heart rate quickly.
The idea is that you get all the benefits of regular exercise in less time. I prefer HIIT to full-blown cardio because I get small breaks between cardio sets. HIIT can take many forms of cardio. What defines HIIT is putting maximum effort into the cardio segments and keeping the rest periods short.
Pam Reif on YouTube is my personal favorite for HIIT. Try her 20-min Abs and Booty, or 15-min total body HIITs! You’ll be burning SO good everywhere!
4. Great Winter Workouts: Cardio
Cardio. Some loath the word while others swear by it. What are your thoughts on the six-letter word?
Doctors and health professionals have encouraged patients to embrace cardio as a powerful pathway to better health. I admit, there’s something amazing about making it through to the end of a sweaty cardio sesh! Cardio can look like several things: running, biking, rowing, stepping, dancing…and so on! Let’s reignite that passion and remember that every heartbeat brings us closer to our goals!
5. Ice Skating
You don’t have to be a professional ice skater to enjoy the health benefits. Cardio, strength, balance, and coordination are just a few perks that come with the sport. Grab a pair of skates and give it a try!
6. Great Winter Workouts: Skiing or Snow Boarding
Not just for the Olympics! With winter’s arrival comes the thrill of winter sports. Skiing and snowboarding may be seasonal, but if you live near snow your adventure awaits.
7. Walking
Yep, you guessed it. Walking made the list. But are you really surprised? Walking is a great way to get fit. I’m not sure if it’s true, but I feel like walking in the cold works a body harder. I know that I sweat more, burn more energy, and feel invigorated after a walk in the cold. If you live near or in the snow, try some walking sticks that are designed for snow walking.
8. Running
Runners seem to have the motivation to run no matter the weather. Do they know something the rest of us have not caught onto yet? Running is a great way to stay fit and prevent holiday weight gain, while also keeping your pet in shape.
9. CrossFit
CrossFit is not for the faint of heart. CrossFit benefits all ages, especially athletes seeking to improve their performance. Anytime someone tells me that they are into CrossFit, the line from Goonies plays in my mine. “Goonies never say die!” CrossFitters are pretty tough, and nothing seems to stand in their way. If you haven’t tried CrossFit, it’s the ultimate all-in-one fitness class meant to challenge you.
10. Dance or Other New Class
Dance is a great form of exercise. It’s never too late to start that dance class you’ve always wanted to try. There are so many different forms of dance to choose from. From ballet, hip-hop, jazz, to Zumba and line dancing. Dancing requires strength, cardio, endurance and coordination. Like dance classes, many gyms offer other classes to try as well. If you get bored easily, why don’t you give a new class a try?
The secret to staying in shape over the holidays and well into the winter season is to stay consistent. It doesn’t matter what type or form of exercise you do. The key is to stay active, work up a sweat, get that heart pumping and those muscles engaged. Who knows, maybe you’ll have fun in the process and develop a love for a new exercise.
