LITTLE WOMEN
I was practically raised on this movie, the book and the movie was one of my favorites! If you are a fan of the book or the movies, I’m so glad you’re here! There was a time when women would spend weeks before Christmas baking and crafting. This was their main source of gift-giving. Do you remember when Amy, (Kristen Dunst) was ecstatic to receive a delectable orange as a gift? If you didn’t see that part, she was saddened to give it away to those less fortunate than her…
This scene stands for so much around Christmas and how they valued something as simple as an orange.
Here are the first two traditions that my kids and I love to do each year. Just as my mother enjoyed doing with me.
Clove Oranges
Ingredients:
Oranges, whole cloves
- Gather some fresh oranges (from the market is fine) and poke tiny cloves into the orange. Let them sit in the fridge or on the counter. They will smell INCREDIBLE! They can be used as all-natural air fresheners or eat them for a tasty treat. Consider giving them as a gift!
Orange Garland
Ingredients:
Oranges, whole cinnamon sticks, wood ornaments and or cinnamon salt dough, hemp twine for your rope
2. Slice your oranges (naval work best), poke a hole in the center, and bake them in the oven. Set the oven to 250 until they are dried out. Let them sit on the counter for a day or two so they continue to harden. Once the oranges are dried, thread them onto the hemp twine. Be sure to create a pattern with tying on cinnamon sticks, add wooden or salt dough ornaments to the mix.
3. You can use the same recipe, but instead, thread ribbon or twine through to make orange-slice ornaments!

Use a REAL Christmas Tree
The Next tradition you can incorporate to have an old fashioned, Little Women’s Christmas, is to have a REAL tree. If you already have this tradition, that is awesome! You are already one step ahead to having your Little Women’s Christmas.
Artificial trees weren’t a popular thing until sometime during or after World War II. In the Late 1800’s (1882) the idea of artificial trees revolved around goose feathers on branches. The war created the trend when live trees were hard to come by.
Using a live tree will infuse your home with the smell of pine, a traditional holiday scent. You can boil pine needles to expand the smell in your home. Or use a simmer pot.

Home-Made Ornaments
Home-made ornaments can make a space feel extra cozy and intimate. Try threading popcorn onto the thread and using it as garland. You can make salt-dough ornaments and use cookie cutters to make fun shapes. One of my personal favorites is to tie a ribbon onto branches.
Take stroll into nature and find your ornaments organically. Try pinecone, feathers, or even seashells. These will work beautifully! If you are hand with a saw, you can make wood ornaments by sawing a small log into sliced ornaments. Drill a hole for your hanging ribbon or twine and paint a picture on the wood slice. You can recycle an old book. By cutting shapes out of pages and then threading a tie through the top.

Go Ice-Skating
There’s a scene in the movie where the sisters, Joe and Amy are Ice-skating with their friend Lori. Lori is played by Christian Bale. Amy falls into the river and Lori saves her. This is where little Amy develops an infatuation with Lori. 🙂 Anyway, ice-skating is a great way to have fun in an old-fashioned way.

Make Christmas Presents
Give the gift of something home-made. Making gifts yourself is a great way to personalize each gift. If you are not very crafty, think simple. Give the gift of something like walnuts, oranges, or baked goods or even a portrait of you or your family.

Go Caroling
Caroling is a long-time standing tradition. There are still groups who dress up with their bonnets, mink hand muffs, and cummerbunds and sing Christmas carols. You don’t need to dress in vintage garments to join the festive tradition.

Light Candles
There was a lack of electricity in the time period of the movie. There was, however, lots of candle usage! There’s something about lighting all the candles and turning off the lights… It’s cozy and intimate for sure. Try reading by candlelight to get in the mood for a Little Women’s Christmas.

Brown Paper Packages
What is it about brown paper packages that scream vintage? There are many today who prefer wrapping their Christmas gifts in brown paper. If you’ve never tried it before, give it a go. The nice thing about brown paper packaging is that it’s quite versatile with ribbon or twine embellishments. If you cannot find the brown paper, you can also use old newspaper, and magazine pages taped together.

See a ballet or Theater Show
Go see a ballet performance or a theater show of sorts. Throughout the movie, Jo and her sisters are always pretending to star in a famous theater show written by Jo. In fact, Amy knows that the best way to seek revenge on her sister Jo, for not letting her attend a ball, was to throw Jo’s story into the fireplace. The ball was where Meg, the oldest sister fell in love with her future husband. In doing so, Meg broke Jo’s heart because she grew up that night.

Bake Something to Give to Others
Bake something that you give to others. There’s something extra special about receiving a gift that someone spent time and effort making. An old-fashioned Little Women’s Christmas must include baking, baking, and more baking.
There you have it. I hope you have the Old-Fashioned ‘Little Women’s’ Christmas and winter season of your dreams! If you would like to re-create the cozy atmosphere, be sure to go here. Scroll down to the How to Have an Old-Fashioned Little Women’s Christmas, title: https://afemininelife.com/shop/

Makes me nostalgic just reading this! I remember many years we didn’t have much, so all our gifts to each other were homemade 🙂
Now I want to watch the movie again!
